Medical Office Administration

This  is designed to educate students on the terminology, processes, and procedures required for administrative support positions and careers in the health care field. The student studies medical information processing and medical administrative software to include familiarization with electronic health records. The curriculum enables the student to learn to integrate the separate functions required to operate health care facilities.

Students who complete the program will be prepared for a variety of positions and jobs including:

This course provides a fundamental understanding of computing including knowledge and use of computer hardware, software, and operating systems, and use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet and e-mail applications.

Competencies:
•   Identify computing fundamentals such as computer hardware, software, and operating systems
•   Learn to navigate the windows environment
•    Gain knowledge of primary applications such as common program, word processing, spreadsheet, and database functions
•   Learn to use online computing including Internet and electronic mail

MATH1000   Math I                                                                                                 60 Hours

This course offers an introduction to basic mathematics, including operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, as well as averages and percentages.

Competencies:
•   Perform different operations with whole numbers
•   Perform different operations with fractions
•   Perform different operations with decimals
•   Solve simple problems with proportions, percentages and averages

MEDA1301  Psychology & Workplace Relations for Healthcare Prof              45 Hours

This course will provide the student with basic principles of psychology required in a health care environment.  As well, students develop essential human-relation skills needed to maintain gainful and satisfying employment. This course includes familiarization with problematic areas found in the workforce, including solving problems, understanding relationships and diversity, increasing personal ethics, and developing strong personal, interpersonal, and human relation skills specific to health occupations.

WKSK1512  English and Writing for Medical Professionals                             80 Hours

Reviews English essentials, which include the parts of speech, sentence structure, correct word usage, capitalization rules, and number rules. These English skills are reinforced as students learn the techniques to write clear, concise, and courteous correspondence.


MEDA1105  Medical Terminology I                                                                      60 Hours

This course provides the student with the skills necessary to interpret and understand medical terminology, in order to be successful in the pursuit of health occupation careers. This is accomplished by utilizing a method of study that not only instructs the students in building medical terms but also gives the student immediate application in utilizing the medical term.

Competencies:
•   Identify basic structure of medical words
•   Apply word building and definitions
•   Use medical abbreviations
•   Correctly use medical terminology

MEDA1001  CPR                                                                                                    10 Hours

With the completion of this class, the student will understand the importance of knowing what to do in a timely manner during and shortly after a medical emergency. Students will learn basics of stopping bleeding, CPR, and maintaining a person until better help arrives.

•   Learn the basics of first aid
•   Helping others until professional help arrives

MEDA1201  Medical Law and Ethics                                                                   30 Hours

This course provides the student exposure to the legal and ethical issues that impact the healthcare setting.

Competencies:
•   Identify legal guidelines/requirements for healthcare
•   Apply medical ethics and related issues
•   Apply risk management processes
•   Identify and apply HIPPA regulations

WKSK1410  Wording Processing                                                                         90 Hours
Focuses on basic word processing features used in creating, editing, saving, and retrieving business documents. Practical business applications involving creating and correctly formatting business documents, completing Chapters, and solving problems will be covered. This competency-based course develops the use of word processing technology. Through performing skills and applying them in different settings, you will become a more efficient user of Microsoft Word. You will develop a sense of responsibility for your own learning as you complete the assignments. This course will enhance your problem-solving and decision-making skills as your
productivity with the software increases. Success in this course requires all of the skills taught in the
BTEC1110 Computer literacy course.


WKSK1600 Spreadsheets                                                                                      60 Hours

Introduces spreadsheet functions and applications. Students will learn how to design, create, manipulate, calculate, and present data. Students will utilize critical thinking skills and apply spreadsheet techniques in developing information for business applications. This competency- based course develops the use of electronic spreadsheet technology. Through performing skills and applying them in different settings, you will become a more efficient user of Microsoft Excel. You will develop a sense of responsibility for your own learning as you complete the assignments. This course will enhance your problem-solving and decision-making skills as your productivity with the software increases.

MEDO1505  Medical Office Administrative Procedures I                                  90 Hours

This course is designed to teach the basic skills needed to perform clerical functions efficiently in a medical office setting.

This course is designed to instruct the medical assistant student in the basic skills necessary to perform proper insurance, coding and billing procedures.
